There's No Place Like the 901

Every city has its own personality, but Memphis has never been shy about showing ours. On September 1, Memphians celebrate 901 Day, an unofficial hometown holiday named for the city’s 901 area code. What started as a clever way to turn the date 9/01 into a celebration of Memphis has grown into a day devoted to local music, food, art, businesses, and the people who make the Bluff City what it is. For 2026, the City of Memphis is expanding the festivities into 901 Weekend, featuring more than 300 local artists, performers and creatives before 901 Day itself arrives on Tuesday, September 1.

There is certainly plenty of history to celebrate. Memphis was officially founded in 1819 on the Fourth Chickasaw Bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. Memphis was named for the ancient Egyptian city on the Nile, an appropriate choice for a new city built along another mighty river. Over the next two centuries, Memphis would leave an outsized mark on American culture. The city helped shape blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll, played an important role in the Civil Rights Movement, and became home to innovations and companies that changed everything from grocery shopping to overnight shipping.

Celebrating Memphis without eating something would hardly seem right. This is a city where barbecue inspires passionate debates and soul food recipes are treated like family heirlooms. A 901 Day lunch or dinner could mean ribs or pulled pork, a plate of hot wings, fried catfish, a soul food spread, or one of the many other dishes that have become part of the city's food culture.

Music deserves its own place in any 901 Day celebration. Memphis didn't simply produce a few famous musicians; its musical traditions helped change popular music around the world. Blues flourished on Beale Street, Sun Records helped launch the rock 'n' roll revolution, and Stax Records created a soul sound recognized almost instantly. Later generations added gospel, rap, and hip-hop to that musical legacy. On 901 Day, listening to Memphis music is practically a civic duty. Put together a playlist that moves from B.B. King, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash to Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, and Al Green, then keep going through Justin Timberlake, Three 6 Mafia, and other great Memphis artists.

This year's festivities give Memphians and tourists alike plenty of opportunities to celebrate the Bluff City. The official 901 Weekend began on Friday, August 28, with Trolley Night activities and a kickoff concert, followed by events at Mud Island and a large 901 on Beale celebration on Sunday, August 30. On September 1 itself, celebrations shift across the city, with local organizations and businesses hosting their own events. Supporting Memphis businesses is one of the simplest ways to turn civic pride into something tangible, and local restaurants, shops, breweries, artists, and makers often get into the 901 spirit with their own celebrations and specials. Some current plans include a Choose901 celebration at Loflin Yard, a Memphoria event at Ghost River Brewing, and a Memphis Redbirds game at AutoZone Park.

Celebrating 901 Day doesn't have to involve a big event. Wear a Memphis shirt, buy something from a local maker, visit a neighborhood you haven't explored in a while, or volunteer with a Memphis nonprofit. Play Memphis music with the windows down and tell someone who recently moved here about the places they need to discover. Memphis has never been a perfect city, and perhaps that is part of why its hometown pride feels so genuine. Its story contains triumph and tragedy, world-changing creativity and difficult history, grit and reinvention. Yet Memphis continues to produce music, food, ideas, businesses, artists, and characters unlike anywhere else. On September 1, we get one day to put all of that front and center. So eat local, shop local, listen local, explore somewhere new and enjoy the city a little more intentionally than usual. After all, there is only one 901!
